I was so excited when Kirsten contacted me to ask if I could capture her surprise proposal to her girlfriend (now fiancé!), Nicole. I’m such a romantic and I’ve always wanted to capture a proposal, since there’s something so magical and beautiful about proposals.
She planned such a perfect day that included many personal touches and it couldn’t have turned out any better. Since Nicole is a car enthusiast, Kirsten booked a limousine to pick them up. I kept asking Kirsten if Nicole had figured it out, since limousines are so exciting, but Kirsten told me that this wasn’t the first time she had booked a luxury vehicle for them so it wasn’t suspicious.
When I arrived at Cullen Central Park in Whitby, I noticed how beautiful the snow looked and it made such a great scene for the proposal. I met up with the couple’s family and wedding party, who were all in on the surprise. They were asked by Kirsten to each bring a flower that meant something to them and a note for Nicole, telling her what she meant to them. I thought this was such a sweet idea, especially once Kirsten told me that Nicole was very interested in flower symbolism. Everyone went to the terrace to wait for Kirsten and Nicole’s arrival. Four people each held up a sign that said ‘Welcome Kirsten and Nicole’ on one side, and Kirsten led Nicole to the terrace with her hands covering Nicole’s eyes so the surprise would be perfect. Once the two joined everyone on the terrace, Kirsten took Nicole’s hands in hers and told her what she meant to her. When the moment was perfect, Kirsten was handed the ring box and everyone turned their signs around so that it read ‘Will you marry me’. It was so beautiful to see how overjoyed they were to spend the rest of their lives together.
It was a frigid cold day, but nothing that thermal socks and boots couldn’t help! Fingers, ears, and noses turned quite red, but it was all fixed during the digital finishing for the images. I also used the cold as an opportunity to encourage close/cuddly poses so Kirsten and Nicole could keep each other warm, which the two love birds naturally did anyway.
Congratulations on your engagement, Kirsten and Nicole! I can’t wait to capture your wedding in 2017!
